Cannabis: High hopes for this special ingredient

There’s a bit of a buzz going round the Men Rock office and big smiles at any mention of cannabis. But it’s not what you might think…

We’re all getting excited about the prospect of offering a range of great new skincare products containing cannabinoids. Those using these products will certainly get many benefits that will make them feel good – but these will not include a cannabis high!

That’s because chemically there are over 100 cannabinoids in the hemp plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) are the most abundant, but they have very different physiological effects on humans.

Medicinal benefits

THCs are the dope, so to speak, producing psychoactive effects. CBDs are the ones that can promote skin health and provide numerous medicinal benefits when applied to the skin. They’re the ones that Carun UK, a major producer, extracts as medicinal hemp oil and uses in its skincare products.

Leaving aside the mechanics of the process which you can reads about here, when CBD is used in skin preparations it can provide a number of very positive effects. These include increased immunity to control infections. So, it is thought to be extremely beneficial in the treatment of conditions such as acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, sores and venous ulcers. It can also be used for grazes, burns and insect bites and is helpful in treating dry, irritated skin and assisting scar prevention.

Anti-inflammatory

Anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, CBD can be used in preparations suitable for regular daily use and problematic skin, helping to maintain and restore balance and a healthy appearance. Low in allergens and high in anti-oxidants, this promising ingredient can effectively minimise the appearance of wrinkles and is very low in allergens.

Carun are among the front runners in the modern development of this ancient ‘miracle’ ingredient and say: ‘Medical Hemp is not only a vehicle for CBD. The hemp plant has been used to treat various disorders for thousands of years in traditional oriental medicine. Personal results and an increasing amount of clinical trials show that Medicinal Hemp successfully treats many skin conditions and is highly beneficial as part of an everyday digestive health regime.’

‘This is a very exciting ingredient which has a very good track record and is building a considerable following,’ says Men Rock CEO Paul Johnson. ‘Good news for our fans is that we’re looking at how we might work this into our men’s grooming mix and we’re having interesting discussions with Carun at the moment.’

We’ll keep you posted.
